Anti-Semitism and Progressive Era Social Science. The case of John R. Commons

This paper explores Common’s views toward Jews in order to assess whether his published writings contain assertion that today would be stigmatized as anti-Semitic. The evidence we provide shows that Commons’ racial characterization of Jews was framed within a broad and indiscriminate xenophobic framework. With other leading Progressive Era social scientists, in fact, Commons shared the idea that the new immigration from Eastern and southern Europe would increase competition in the labor market, drive down wages, and lead Anglo-Saxon men and women to have fewer children, since they would not want them to compete with those who survive on less. This is the case of plural flexions : -s for the plural of nouns and adjectives and -nt for verbs at the third person of indicative present. Earlier research showed that on the one hand the interpretation of these marks precedes their production and that this nominal flexion proceeding appears earlier and more correctly than adjectival flexion proceeding and verbal flexion (-nt). Four Potential Meanings of Double Negation

The figurative use of double negations (not uninteresting, not unhappy) has been described by linguists and rhetoricians with regards to the rhetorical figure litotes. Both mitigation and strengthening have been proposed as aims of litotes (Horn, 1989; Krifka, 2007; van der Wouden, 1996). An analysis of the construction nicht un-adjective (not un-adj.) on the basis of German corpora leads to a coherent system of pragmatic functions for this sort of double negations. This paper addresses the question whetherbullshitis a reasonable pragmatic category. In the first part of the paper, drawing on the insights of Harry Frankfurt’s seminal essay, bullshit is defined as an act of insincere asserting where the speaker shows (a) a loose concern for the truth, and (b) does not want the addressee to become aware of condition (a). The study examined the role of religion in a family setting by evaluating relationships between religious attitudes and quality of life among parents and their adolescent children. Previous research suggested that religious beliefs and behavior play an important role in shaping family relations and their members’ well-being. The group of 465 parents and adolescents completed four scales measuring religiousness, quality of life, and satisfaction with life. Results using correlational analyses and cluster comparisons showed that religiousness had a significant effect on both subjective quality of life dimensions and satisfaction with life among parents and adolescents.
